Upper Keys Attractions Did you know that there are 42 bridges connecting the approximately 126 miles of the beautiful Florida Keys?
Uppermost is Key Largo, made famous by the Humphrey Bogart/Lauren Bacall movie of the same name. For ambience, visit a local tavern (Caribbean Club) that claims it is the inspiration for the movie's locale, and "The African Queen" Bogie captained with Katherine Hepburn, now berthed at the Holiday Inn. Key Largo Community Park features tennis, bike & jogging paths &* 3 swimming pools! For swimming and snorkeling, visit John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. You can also glass bottom boat or dive the sunken naval ship, USS Spiegel Grove, the world's largest artificial reef. Tavernier on Plantation Key is the site of the upper Keys medical facility, Mariners Hospital, part of the Baptist Health Systems. All medical specialties are covered as well as the latest in hyperbaric chambers and a brand new health and wellness facility. Harry Harris County Park is also in Tavernier, and offers a boat ramp and swimming lagoon.
Further south is Islamorada known as the "Village of Islands" (because it spans several keys) and the "Sport Fishing Capital of the World." Former President George Bush hosts his namesake bonefishing tournament here each year, and novice or experienced angler, you'll want to give Keys fishing a try! Islamorada's Founders Park offers a sandy beach and swimming pool set amid a beautiful outdoor recreation area. The "Theater of the Sea" at Mile Marker 84.5, oceanside offers swims with sea lions & dolphins, and there are several Dolphin Research facilities as well. Don't forget to sample the area's restaurants--from the "5-Star" to the casual, from fresh stone crab to Florida lobster, the Keys have it all! |
